TiVo Premiere

March 8th, 2010 · No Comments

So…TiVo just released TiVo Premiere.  I’ve been a TiVo user now for 6 years, I can’t imagine life without it anymore.  Going to other people’s houses, I see commercials and start searching for the remote to fast forward.  I even watch live sports on delay any more.  I own two TiVo HD boxes and have a Series 2 box sitting in my crawlspace (know anyone who wants one?).  I think its safe to say I’m a loyal customer.I was surprised today to see that TiVo just launched the TiVo Premiere.  Not so much surprised that they have a new product, but that it doesn’t do anything new.  Its got a new remote (which as far as I can tell will be available for existing boxes), its got Pandora coming (which as far as I can tell will be available for existing boxes), and its totally rewritten in Flash.  Flash?  Really?  I find that strange.  I know some will say its got 1080p, but with no broadcast content available in 1080p, and none ever expected to be available, that leaves Netflix movies.  Netflix has yet to commit to 1080p streaming, so I really don’t know what the big deal is.It seems to me that the big missing feature from TiVo is still the ability to upload your own content, or even better view your own content from a network share.  Unfortunately I just don’t see how this ever happens.  Maybe the brand new Flash interface and the dual core box TiVo is dumping into living rooms will prove to be the answer, but for now, it looks like a TiVo HD in a new package, and thats not getting my money, at least not yet.
